With busted pipes don't worry, don't turn on the hot taps but turn off the central heating system and switch off any immersion heater. With frozen pipes in Detroit turn off the main water supply, never use a naked pipe to thaw a pipe. Don't try to thaw the pipes to quickly. Always start thawing a pipe at the nearest part at the tap.
